The New York Liberty celebrate after Sabrina Ionescu made a 3-point basket in the final seconds of the second half against the Indiana Fever at Barclays Center on May 14, 2021, in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. The Liberty won 90-87.

Sabrina Ionescu of the New York Liberty has breathed new life into the team and WNBA as a whole. This game was close for all four quarters, and Ionescu was really leading the charge for the Liberty. In the last several minutes of the fourth quarter, it started to look like the game was going into overtime, but Ionescu was passed the ball with only a few seconds left, and just knew she was going to make it. I knew she would really react, so I kept my lens trained on her after she released the ball. Sure enough, it went in for a three-point basket, and Ionescu turned around toward her team’s bench and screamed, smiled and jumped. Liberty teammates swarmed her with a huge congratulations, as you can see in this image. I really love this image because even though we can’t see Sabrina’s face, the faces of her teammates say it all.

Jared McCann of the Pittsburgh Penguins watches as the New York Islanders celebrate their 4-3 win during overtime in Game 1 of the First Round of the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs at PPG PAINTS Arena on May 16, 2021, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Game 1 of the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs between the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Islanders was a competitive game. When photographing games that go back and forth throughout the entirety of the series, I always expect to look for the emotions at the end of the game because they are usually more exciting. In this particular game, it went into overtime and the Islanders ended up scoring and put the Penguins away. I was on the opposite side of the ice where the goal was scored, so I tried to capture both the excitement of the Islanders and the dejection of the Penguins after a hard-fought game in a single frame, when I saw Jared McCann of the Penguins watching the Islanders celebrate their overtime win.

Blake Leeper trains at UCLA’s Drake Stadium on May 13, 2021, in Los Angeles, California. Leeper is an eight-time Paralympic Track and Field international medalist, world record holder and three-time American record holder. He is hoping to be the first double amputee to compete in the Olympics for the American team. A panel appointed by track and field’s global governing body recently ruled that Leeper’s blade-like prostheses give him an unfair advantage because of their height. Leeper is now training on new prostheses that are 1.5 inches shorter in hopes that the new legs will be approved. (Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)
