For the second time this season, the baseball world has been given a Nick Castellanos home run meme.

Baseball is a game of patterns and trends. The most hardcore romantics will give you the line about how this is a game that was played the exact same way today as it was 100 years ago.

Sometimes you don’t even need to go back that far to see bizarre, if not darkly humorous, trends. Look no further than Nick Castellanos and his uncanny ability to his a home run at the absolute worst time for the broadcast team in the booth.

On Monday night, as the Royals broadcast team took a somber step back from the game to eulogize the father of Pat Gorman, Castellanos blasted a home run that awkwardly ruined the moment.

It didn’t really ruin the moment, as the eulogy was still effective and meaningful. But it did require a jarring turn of events that forced the broadcast team into an awkward shift.

What is the Nick Castellanos home run meme?

This is not the first time we’ve been gifted with a Castellanos home run meme. The original work of art featured Castellanos blasting a home run in the middle of Thom Brennaman’s apology for using a homophobic earlier in the Reds broadcast.

Brennaman was caught on a hot mic out of a commercial break using a slur, an incident quickly caught fire and engulfed Twitter in one of those did he really say what we think he said moments.

He indeed said what we thought he said, which we won’t repeat here, and he used airtime later in the broadcast to apologize. In the middle of that apology, Castellanos hit a home run and gave us an absolutely mind-melting moment of viral gold.

Brennaman broke in the middle of his apology to call the home run, but didn’t break his somber tone.

It was truly incredible, and incredibly bizarre. Brennaman has since left his position as Reds broadcaster because of the incident but it’s now a defining moment in his career.

To bring the Castellanos home run meme full circle, the infamous Brennaman apology game was during a game between the Reds and Royals, and was happening at Kauffman Stadium.
