Twitter didn’t hold back from Team USA Basketball losing their first match to Team Nigeria in the 2021 pre-Olympics exhibtion.

The pre-Olympic Basketball exhibitions are underway, and Team USA has gotten off to the worst start imaginable.

Despite having the likes of Kevin Durant, Damian Lillard, Jayson Tatum and other NBA stars, the  U.S. fell 90-87 in their first exhibition match against Nigeria, who went into the game as 30-point underdogs.

Twitter didn’t hold back after the defeat.

Well who could have seen that one coming?

Nigeria finished the game having made 20 3-pointers on the night while out-rebounding the United States 46-34. Some might call this a revenge game of sorts, as the victory for Nigeria comes nine years after they were defeated by Team USA by 83 points. The previous meeting between the United States and Nigeria saw the U.S. come away with a 110-66 win during a 2016 exhibition.

The loss to Nigeria for Team USA Basketball drew a lot of reaction

It was an impressive win for Nigeria, who never trailed throughout the fourth quarter. The loss drops Team USA’s record to 54-3 in exhibition games dating back to 1992.

Durant led all U.S. scorers with 17 points while shooting 4-for-13 from the field. Tatum also added 15 points while Lillard finished with 14.

It seems like every Team USA Olympic squad gets compared to another as far as which squad is superior. To put things in perspective, the closest contest for the 1992 Dream Team was a 117-85 match against Croatia in the Gold Medal Final. The closest game for the 2012 Gold Medal U.S. team was a 99-94 win over Lithuania.

The reaction from the United States’ loss to Nigeria feels similar to the 2008 US Team, which was heavily criticized for finishing that Olympics with the Bronze Medal.

Accepting anything less than a Gold Medal for Team USA in 2021 would be an utter disappointment.
