Saints sign former Pro Bowl linebacker on his birthday

The New Orleans Saints gave linebacker Kwon Alexander an awesome birthday gift on Tuesday — a one-year contract.

With training camp underway, the New Orleans Saints are preparing for an important season. This will be the first year the Saints will be without quarterback Drew Brees. But with the preseason approaching, the Saints decided to bring back a familiar face to their linebacking corps.

According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Saints have agreed to terms with linebacker Kwon Alexander on a one-year contract worth up to $3 million on Tuesday. To make the signing even more special, the agreement came on Alexander’s 27th birthday.

Alexander was, understandably, hyped about the signing, as evidenced by his tweet on Tuesday night.

Alexander, a former 2015 fourth-round selection by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, signed on with the San Francisco 49ers back in 2019 on a four-year, $54 million contract. But in the middle of the 2020 campaign, the 49ers traded Alexander to the Saints in exchange for linebacker Kiko Alonso and a conditional fifth-round draft pick.

The linebacker played seven games in New Orleans, but his season ended in Week 16 after he suffered a torn Achilles tendon during their game against the Minnesota Vikings. At the end of the season, the Saints released Alexander from his contract. Now, he is coming back for the upcoming campaign.

This past season, Alexander tallied 27 combined tackles, four defended passes, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and one quarterback hit. Through his six-year career, Alexander recorded 471 total tackles (36 for loss), 20 quarterback hits, 30 defended passes, nine forced fumbles (four recoveries), 8.5 sacks and seven interceptions.

Safe to say that Alexander will never forget his 27th birthday.
