No. 1 overall draft pick Trevor Lawrence made his long-awaited debut for the Jaguars in a preseason game against the Browns.

The Trevor Lawrence era is here.

Jaguars fans got their first real chance to give an ovation to their new quarterback on Saturday as Jacksonville kicked off the preseason against the Browns.

When Lawrence took the field to lead his first NFL drive, the fans at TIAA Bank Field treated him to a welcoming roar.

As the No. 1 overall pick, Lawrence is due a bit of love from the home crowd. It’s his job to get them going like that on a regular basis.

Jaguars fans already love Trevor Lawrence

It wasn’t too long before Lawrence gave fans other reasons to cheer. After all, the only thing better than the promise of a young quarterback is seeing him actually live up to the hype.

That’s not to say it all went well for Lawrence. His very first play was a strip-sack courtesy of Sheldon Day. While the quarterback lost the ball, the Jaguars recovered.

From there, things definitely looked up for Lawrence. He went 6-of-9 for 71 yards in his first two drives. However, he wasn’t able to generate any points and took one more sack from Porter Gustin.

Lawrence is in a battle with Gardner Minshew for the starting job in 2021. Whether or not he wins the job outright before the season begins, it’s clear he’s the future of the franchise. His success in college took him on a steady path towards becoming the top pick in the draft. Jaguars fans have something to look forward to when it comes to the Clemson product.

Saturday was the first taste to whet the appetite more than anything. There should be more to come.
