Celtics give Robert Williams surprising contract extension

The Boston Celtics have reportedly agreed to terms with center Robert Williams on a four-year contract extension.

The Boston Celtics have had themselves a busy offseason. They traded Kemba Walker, signed former Los Angeles Lakers guard Dennis Schroder and signed Marcus Smart to a long-term contract extension. As it turns out, the Celtics were far from finished, as they agreed to terms with a player currently on the roster.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Boston and center Robert Williams have agreed to terms on a four-year, $54 million contract extension on Friday.

As Wojnarowski notes, this deal now puts Williams’ salary in the top half of the league’s centers, despite the fact that he’s only started 16 games in his NBA career.

Boston selected Williams with the 27th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft out of Texas A&M. In his first two seasons with the Celtics, Williams only played in 61 games, three of which were starts. This past year is when Williams truly started to see an increased role off the bench.

Williams started in 13 of 52 games for Boston, where averaged 8.0 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.8 blocks a night — all of which were career highs. Additionally, Williams shot 72.1 percent from the field, which was a single-season high as well.

Even with his limited starting experience, the Celtics obviously have a ton of faith in him to be a part of their corps for the foreseeable future. Hence why he is set to earn an annual salary of $13.5 million.
