Eiking stays in red as Roglic wins second stage at 2021 La Vuelta a Espana

Primoz Roglic won Stage 11 of La Vuelta a Espana on August 26, making it his second stage win in this year’s race.

Defending champion Primoz Roglic won Stage 11 at the 2021 La Vuelta a Espana, his second stage win at the race this year.

Roglic lost the red jersey on Stage 10 to Odd Christian Eiking who now has a lead of over a minute on him in the overall classification standings.

Primoz Roglic makes strange play to grab 10 seconds

Team Jumbo-Visma raced aggressively to gain a 10-second bonus for the stage win for Roglic but Eiking crossed the line in the same group, keeping him in the red jersey and the overall race lead.

A five-man breakaway kept ahead of the peloton by nearly two minutes for most of the 133-kilometer stage on the flat before hitting a small climb in the last 20 kilometers. At this point, most of the breakaway was caught as Team Movistar, Team Bike Exchange and Team Jumbo-Visma took turns on the front of the peloton.

However, Magnus Cort Neilsen pulled away from the breakaway and made it up the climb with a 20-second lead over the top. Damiano Caruso attempted to go after him, taking three extra points over the top of the climb for the mountains classification but rejoined the peloton very quickly.

Neilsen made it all the way to the final 24-percent slope of the final climb at the finish line within the last kilometer. His team, Team Education First-Nippo is only chasing stage wins as their leader Hugh Carthy dropped out in the first few stages.

Neilsen has already won a stage in this year’s La Vuelta a Espana. But he was soon caught by the peloton who was only 14 seconds behind him at the base of the climb and both Enric Mas and Roglic passed him quickly. Roglic then jumped ahead of Mas in the final sixty meters.

The standings have not changed with Eiking still leading the charge and Guillame Martin still coming in second. Roglic and Mas are in third and fourth with Lopez and Haig in fifth and sixth.

Team Education First – Nippo’s Simon Carr dropped out mid-stage and Jasper Phillipsen was a nonstarter for the stage.

Fabio Jakobsen still leads the sprint classification while Caruso leads the mountains classification, nine points ahead of Romain Bardet.
