Saints chose Twitter violence after embarrassing Aaron Rodgers and Packers

The New Orleans Saints’ official Twitter account trolled the Green Bay Packers and their fanbase following their 38-3 blowout victory.

The New Orleans Saints were not given much of a chance prior to their Week 1 matchup against the Green Bay Packers. Not only were they facing reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers, but this was the first season that the Saints would not have Drew Brees on the roster. Ahead of the big game, the Saints worked out and signed veteran Desmond Trufant to bolster their secondary.

Aaron Nagler, co-founder of CheeseheadTV, tweeted out that it did not matter who the Saints were bringing in, because the Packers were going to drop 30 points on them. That tweet was on Sept. 6, and New Orleans’ official Twitter account responded six days later to correct Nagler that the Packers were only able to drop three points in New Orleans’ huge 38-3 win.

The Saints were ready to dish it back to their doubters after the huge Week 1 victory.

New Orleans was supposedly at a disadvantage facing off against Green Bay’s high-powered offense. It certainly did not help that star corner Marshon Lattimore was listed as questionable for the game and trade acquisition Bradley Roby was not available for the game. Yet, Lattimore played, and New Orleans’ defense feasted on the Packers offense. In fact, Rodgers was chased out of the game in the fourth quarter and replaced with backup Jordan Love when things got out of reach for Green Bay.

But perhaps the biggest story of the game was the success of Jameis Winston, who was the official successor to Brees. After a tumultuous tenure with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Winston joined the Saints last year, and re-signed on a one-year deal this offseason, and he looked like a star on Sunday in Jacksonville, Fla.

Winston only threw 20 passes on the game, but he recorded 14 completions for 148 yards and five touchdowns. Those were the fewest passing yards in a five-touchdown game in NFL history.

The Saints will look to build off of this impressive win next week when they face the rival Carolina Panthers.
