The Atlanta Braves are playing the Houston Astros in the 2021 World Series where they’ll try to win their first title in 26 years.

The Atlanta Braves were given the title of the “Team of the ’90s,” reaching the fall classic in 1991, 1992, 1995, 1996 and 1999. But they got the job done in 1995, bringing the Commissioner’s Trophy to Atlanta for the very first time in1995, taking down the Cleveland Indians in six games to win the World Series.

The 1995 Atlanta Braves featured five eventual Hall of Famers: Chipper Jones (Class of 2018), Tom Glavine (2014), Greg Maddux (2014) and John Smoltz (2015). They were led by manager Bobby Cox, who entered the Hall with Maddux and Glavine in 2014.

Jones, a rookie in 1995, batted .286 in the series, including three doubles and an RBI. Marquise Grissom had nine hits in six games, batting .360. Maddux started two games and pitched sixteen innings, posting a 2.25 ERA. And Glavine had two starts, pitching 14 innings and posting a remarkable 1.29 ERA end earning World Series MVP honors.

After blowing a chance to clinch the series in Cleveland, the Braves returned to Atlanta for Game 6 looking to shut the door on the Indians. Glavine was given the ball and did his job, giving up just one hit in eight innings pitched.

The only offense came in the bottom of the sixth, when David Justice sent Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium in a frenzy with a home run to right field, giving the Braves the only run they needed. The Braves won 1-0, and brought the city of Atlanta its first championship.

The Braves will be looking for another championship against the Houston Astros in the 2021 World Series.
