Penn State fans are over the moon to see that James Franklin is staying in Happy Valley for the foreseeable future with his new extension.

Penn State University has officially come to an agreement with James Franklin on a 10-year extension to remain the head coach of the Nittany Lions football team. Franklin, who has been with the program since 2014, will earn roughly $7.5 million per year, while his buyout begins at 12 million early next year.

Franklin was thrown around as a name to watch for the vacant USC head coaching position as well as the Florida position, but Penn State and Franklin both seem committed to building something long-term in Happy Valley.

“Penn State’s future is bright, and I’m honored to continue to serve as your head football coach,” Franklin told the press. “Nine weeks ago, the administration approached me about making a long-term investment in our football program. This prompted numerous conversations outlining the resources needed to be competitive at a level that matches the expectations and history of Penn State.”

Eric Barron, Penn State’s university president, even shared his support of the extension. “Penn State is very happy to offer this extension to Coach Franklin, who has created an environment in which our student-athletes can be successful on the field, as well as leaders in our community and beyond.”

Many fans were very excited to hear about the extension

Franklin is an extremely popular figure at Penn State and amongst PSU fans. One of the first people to make sure to reach out to Coach Franklin on Twitter was his standout linebacker from last year, Micah Parsons.

While some Penn State fans have been a bit skeptical of the signing, most fans recognize the undeniable talent and value of Franklin.

Some fans are also smart enough to point out the value of Penn State making this signing at this point in the season.

Even the future of Penn State, Drew Allar, weighed in on the signing.
