During the MLS Cup final, an NYCFC goal brought about a strong reaction from the Portland Timbers home crowd, but one fan went too far.

The Portland Timbers welcomed New York City FC to a raucous Providence Park on Saturday for the MLS Cup final and the home supporters were hoping for the Timbers to notch a title in dramatic fashion. Early on, though, NYCFC had other plans.

In the 41st minute, New York City forward Valentin Castellanos found the back of the net with a huge goal that lifted the visiting side ahead. As is always the case in soccer, there was a celebration by the club on the sidelines in front of the barricade. As that was going on, though, the Portland crowd got a bit too rowdy.

As NYCFC players gathered to celebrate the goal, striker Jesus Medina was struck in the face by a beer thrown by a fan that sent him to ground and had to get him checked out by trainers.

That’s just highly unacceptable behavior from fans and, frankly, we should all be thankful that something worse didn’t happen to Medina in this instance.

As for the match at hand, NYCFC seemed to be heading towards a massive upset victory to win the MLS Cup when Portland answered in injury time of the second half to level the score and force extra time.
