Cam Newton. Pick Analysis. QB. 87. Scouting Report. Carolina Panthers. 1. player

Cam Newton’s ball security woes led to him being benched in favor of P.J. Walker

This was a game where the Carolina Panthers lost it more than the Atlanta Falcons won it. Atlanta did a great job running the ball and forcing turnovers on defense. However, better quarterback play on the Carolina side of things would have resulted in a victory for the Panthers. Cam Newton may have gotten the start for them, but he got benched in favor of P.J. Walker during the second half.

Newton completed 15-of-23 passes for 178 yards and an interception. While he had a rushing touchdown on the afternoon, he also had a terrible fumble on a play he should not have forced the handoff on. Carolina made it interesting down the stretch with a touchdown off an Atlanta turnover, but the Dirty Birds won the NFC South rivalry game 29-21 to improve to 6-7 on the year.

Though his stat line may not have been atrocious, Newton clearly does not have it any more under center. His inconsistencies in the passing game and questionable decision-making held the Panthers back in this one. While head coach Matt Rhule will always back his Temple guy Walker, Carolina does not have a quarterback. This is why reaching into the past is always a horrible idea.

It is only year two of Rhule’s reign in the Queen City, but Carolina is so far away from being good.
