NFL Twitter roasted ESPN’s Booger McFarland for his take on San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance.

The San Francisco 49ers showed the world that they were ready to move on from quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo after they traded up to receive the third-overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft to select Trey Lance out of North Dakota State. After the team fell one win short of reaching Super Bowl 56, it sounds as though the team is ready to move on from Garoppolo this offseason, paving the way for Lance to start in 2022.

During an appearance on ESPN’s “NFL Live” show on Monday, Booger McFarland expressed that he is “terribly concerned” for Lance. Take a listen to his comments in the tweet below:

McFarland’s comments circulated across Twitter, and users reacted to his take on the 49ers’ quarterback of the future.

Lance did not have many appearances in his rookie season, but did receive two starts when Garoppolo picked up calf and thumb injuries. In regards to the injuries McFarland referenced, Lance suffered a chip in his finger in training camp and sprained his knee during his first career start in Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals.

In his first start against the Cardinals, Lance completed 15-of-29 pass attempts for 192 yards and an interception while running for 89 yards on 16 carries in the 17-10 loss. Then in Week 17 against the Houston Texans, Lance threw for 249 yards, two touchdowns and one interception while completing 16-of-23 of his throws.

Overall, Lance threw for 603 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions while completing 57.7-percent of his passes in six games. Lance also ran for 168 yards and one touchdown on 38 carries.

If the 49ers officially move on from Garoppolo this offseason, the starting job will likely be Lance’s entering the 2022 campaign if they do not make a move for a big-name quarterback. When that happens, fans and media are going to see how Lance does in his first full year as “QB1” on the 49ers depth chart.
