The Minnesota Vikings have extended and given a raise to quarterback Kirk Cousins.

All Kirk Cousins does is get the bag from the Minnesota Vikings.

Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network reported that “the Vikings are signing Pro Bowl quarterback Kirk Cousins to a one-year, $35 million fully guaranteed extension that puts him under contract through 2023.”

He would be getting a raise to $40 million for the 2022 season. $55 million will be payable by March 2023. He also getting a no-trade clause from the Vikings.

This is a good move for the Vikings and Cousins, as it frees up $14 million in salary cap space for 2022. Cousins will not be playing in a contract year for a first-time head coach in Kevin O’Connell. Not only that but he gets a raise, more guaranteed money and that delicious no-trade clause.

It is so good to be Cousins.

Kirk Cousins Vikings contract extension details

Cousins will be getting $40 million this season and $35 million in 2023, fully guaranteed. $55 million of that will be payable by March 2023. He also has a no-trade clause, so he cannot be dealt at any point over the next two seasons unless he agrees to it. Few quarterbacks have this kind of power in the league, and Cousins is certainly one of them. Win or lose, the dude secures the bag.

No matter how it ends for Cousins in the NFL, there will be case studies about how this former fourth-round pick by Washington out of Michigan State became one of the most well-compensated quarterbacks in league history. Of course, he has had to play like a top-10 passer throughout much of his career to make this possible, but it is truly remarkable what he has done.

Ultimately, the Vikings are not rebuilding under new leadership. O’Connell and new general Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah believe this team can win and win big immediately with Cousins under center. Of course, the Vikings still play in the same NFC North as the Green Bay Packers. Fortunately for them, the Chicago Bears and the Detroit Lions are in the middle of rebuilding.

All it will take is one great postseason run to change the narrative surrounding Cousins in the NFL.
