The 2022 World Cup draw will take place on Friday, April 1 in Doha, Qatar. Here’s what you need to know and how to watch. 

The 2022 World Cup will come into greater focus on Friday with the draw that will determine the tournament’s opening round groups.

After three years of qualifying games and delays to that process as a result of the pandemic, the 32 finalists will be drawn into the eight groups.

The World Cup finals will open on Nov. 21 and conclude Dec. 18 in eight stadiums across five cities in Qatar, the first time the competition will be played in the Middle East. It is also the first time the World Cup will be played during the winter.

The tournament will feature defending champions France, five-time winners Brazil and perennial favorites like Argentina, Germany, Spain and England. Italy, however, will not be among them.

Hosts Qatar will be placed in Group A. The other 31 countries will be split into four pots based on FIFA rankings, with the top-rated teams joining Qatar in Pot 1.

Each group will have no more than one nation from any confederation, with the exception being Europe who can have no more than two nations in any given group.
