After trading away Davante Adams, Aaron Rodgers and the Packers need a No. 1 wide receiver. Could a trade for an AFC star be in the cards?

Perhaps the worst-kept secret in the NFL as the draft quickly approaches is that the Green Bay Packers need a wide receiver. There has been plenty of speculation that the franchise will finally use a first-round pick on a pass-catcher to aid Aaron Rodgers in addition to talking about other potential moves, most recently taking a swing to trade for DK Metcalf.

But what if there was a dark-horse trade candidate hiding in plain sight that Green Bay could make a move for?

Locked On Packers podcast host Peter Bukowski noted on Twitter that Good Morning Football host Peter Schrager has said multiple times on the show that he would like to see current Chargers wideout Keenan Allen on the Packers. Bukowski then noted that the Chargers just paid Mike Williams big money and could save $16.5 million if they trade Allen after June 1.

Packers rumors: Could Green Bay trade for Keenan Allen?

It’s first important to note that this is all, at this point, just talk about a move that would make sense. But it almost makes too much sense to ignore the possibility, even if there aren’t any current rumors about a trade.

Allen would be a fascinating addition to the Green Bay offense. While most people would put him in a tier below Davante Adams in terms of star power, the 29-year-old is similar to the receiver now calling Las Vegas home in many ways. Particularly, they both aren’t necessarily speedy or overwhelmingly physical players, but have enjoyed immense success due to their technical prowess and route-running.

Would the Chargers be interested in giving up Allen? That’s certainly the biggest piece of the puzzle to making this trade even remotely possible. But after paying Williams this offseason and getting closer to needing to back up the Brinks truck for Justin Herbert as he enters year three, LA could start looking for more wiggle room under the salary cap. Trading Allen would provide that.

Again, this is all conjecture right now. But with someone like Schrager mentioning it multiple times and with the sense the move could make for both sides, it’s something well worth keeping in the back of your mind as we move deeper into the offseason.
