Chiefs trade for former second-round pick to continue defensive overhaul

The Kansas City Chiefs added another cornerback to their roster, as they acquired Lonnie Johnson Jr. from the Houston Texans.

The Kansas City Chiefs spent this past weekend adding to their defense in the NFL Draft. That was evident in the first round when they selected cornerback Trent McDuffie and edge rusher George Karlaftis. As it turns out, the Chiefs were not done.

If you wanted an instant reaction from Johnson regarding the trade, he provided that on Twitter. Yes, he was pumped about getting traded to Kansas City.

Johnson was not the only person who was pumped. Justin Reid, who signed a multi-year contract with the Chiefs this offseason, reacted to being reunited with Johnson on his Instagram story.

Johnson was selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft by Houston after playing college football at Kentucky. He spent three seasons with the team, where he started in 19 of 44 games played.

This past season with the Texans, Johnson recorded 55 combined tackles, six defended passes and three interceptions through 14 games. In coverage, Johnson allowed 22 completions for 380 yards and two touchdowns on 38 targets, per Pro Football Reference.

Kansas City is looking to make a return to the Super Bowl after falling just short in 2021. Yet the AFC is going to be much tougher, considering all of the moves that were made across the conference in the 2022 league year. Kansas City added to their defense throughout the league year and made one more move on Monday after bringing in Lonnie Johnson Jr.
