Sacramento Republic FC will be looking to pull off another upset Wednesday against an MLS side when they take on Sporting Kansas City at Heart Health Park in the U.S. Open Cup semifinals.

The USL Championship side is aiming to be the first non-MLS team to reach the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final since the Charleston Battery did in 2008.

The winner of the West bracket will face the victor of the Orlando City SC-New York Red Bulls match in the championship game.

The U.S. Open Cup, founded in 1914, is a tournament open to all U.S. Soccer Federation affiliated teams, including amateur adult club teams. In the tournament’s 105-year history, 63 different clubs have lifted the trophy.

The final will be played in September. The date has yet to be finalized.

Sporting KC has had a rough MLS season, spending much of that time in the Western Conference cellar. By contrast, they have had a successful U.S. Open Cup campaign. Sacramento Republic FC, meanwhile, has already knocked out two MLS teams in the U.S. Open Cup: San Jose Earthquakes in the round of 16 and the Los Angeles Galaxy in the quarterfinals.

Sacramento Republic FC will certainly be a tough opponent, especially at home. Neutrals will be rooting for the Cinderella side to continue their run. In the end, look for Sporting KC to emerge the winner.

The game will be the first-ever meeting between the sides.
