The Auburn Tigers were the victims of a controversial call on a muffed punt review against the Alabama Crimson Tide.

The Auburn Tigers are in the news in regards to who will and won’t be their next head coach. Regardless of who that will be, Auburn is looking to end their regular season on a high note by defeating the Alabama Crimson Tide in the annual Iron Bowl game.

There was one call that has been the subject of controversy.

Late in the second quarter, Alabama’s James Burnip sent a 47-yard punt to Auburn return man Keionte Scott, who appeared to have fumbled the ball. The Crimson Tide recovered and regained possession. But during the review, CBS rules analyst Gene Steratore pointed out that the football didn’t change direction as it came down and looked as though Scott missed the football altogether.

After review, the play stood as called. Alabama recovered the fumble. Take a look at the play and judge for yourselves.

The call did sting Auburn almost automatically. Already trailing 28-14, the Tigers watched as their deficit increased four plays later after Crimson Tide quarterback Bryce Young connected with Traeshon Holden for a 27-yard touchdown.

Auburn was first to get on the scoreboard after a 24-yard touchdown run by quarterback Robby Ashford. From there, the Tigers surrendered 21 unanswered points on a five-yard touchdown run by Young, a 10-yard touchdown reception by Jase McClellan, and a five-yard run by Roydell Williams.

The Tigers would cut the deficit to 28-14 on a touchdown pass from Ashford to Ja’Varius Johnson. But then, Alabamas scored twice before halftime.

Not an ideal day for Auburn. Fans will certainly be looking back at that muffed punt call.
