San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance, who is looking to win the starting job, was spotted working out with one of the top signal callers in the game.

The San Francisco 49ers made a massive trade in the 2021 NFL Draft to move up to the No. 3 spot to take a quarterback. That signal caller was North Dakota State’s Trey Lance.

He entered this past season as the team’s starting quarterback, but unfortunately suffered a fractured ankle in Week 2, which effectively ended his season. Now, he is set to compete for the starting quarterback role alongside Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold.

Lance is getting ready for said competition, as he was spotted working out in a video recorded by cinematographer Preston Smith. Working out at that same location was none other than Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and Super Bowl 57 MVP Patrick Mahomes.

49ers fans have got to be excited seeing Lance throwing alongside Mahomes this offseason.

San Francisco had high hopes for Lance, as they traded a bevy of high draft picks to move up to the No. 3 spot in the draft. With Trevor Lawrence going first to the Jacksonville Jaguars and Zach Wilson getting selected by the New York Jets, the 49ers had their choice of Lance, Mac Jones, and Justin Fields. While there was plenty of buzz that San Francisco moved up to select Jones, they selected Lance.

After sitting his rookie season, Lance was given the opportunity to start the year, with Jimmy Garoppolo being demoted as the backup. Lance struggled in Week 1 of last season in a rainy game against the Chicago Bears. But in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks, Lance suffered his eventual season-ending ankle injury while scrambling.

Now, Lance will have to battle for the QB1 position on the depth chart.

Purdy shined while filling in for Lance and Garoppolo, who suffered a broken foot in Week 12. Purdy led the team to a perfect 5-0 record in the final five games of the regular-season, and helped lead the team to the NFC Championship Game. But, Purdy is currently recovering from a torn UCL in his right elbow, which occurred in the title game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The 49ers brought in Darnold to give them more options at the position. Darnold did perform admirably late in the 2022 season with the Carolina Panthers. Darnold threw for 1,143 yards, seven touchdowns, and three interceptions while completing 58.6-percent of his passes.

Lance is putting in the work this offseason to get ready for training camp, and he just so happened to be throwing alongside Mahomes.
