Packers could give Aaron Rodgers a strong middle finger on draft night

The New York Jets have shown interest in Ohio State wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Of course, the Green Bay Packers could use some wide receiver help as well.

Oh, what a dilemma for Aaron Rodgers.

While the Jets were able to trade for the longtime Packers quarterback, in doing so they swapped draft picks, gifting Green Bay the opportunity to swoop in and select a player New York is interested in.

Namely, Jaxon Smith-Njigba is high on the Jets draft board. The Ohio State product would only add to Rodgers war chest of weapons at the skill positions in his first season as a Jet.

Of course, Smith-Njigba has received some interest from Green Bay as well, with the OSU product hinting that the Packers are interest in upgrading at wideout as recently as the NFL Combine.

“They are definitely looking for a receiver,” Smith-Njigba said at the time.

Since then, several publications have linked the pair. In Jordan Love’s first year as full-time starter, it makes since that the Packers would want to gift him some weapons. Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs and Co. are serviceable to say the least, but another young wideout to grow with Love and the existing core may be too good to pass up.

Chris Callaway of Zone Coverage commented on how Smith-Njiba is an ideal fit for the Packers.

"“But why him? Well, for starters, he would be the perfect complement to last year’s draft picks in Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs. Smith-Njigba is a tactician over the middle of the field, with the footwork required to get open. He’s not a true burner, but his ability to create space and move the chains will be of the utmost importance to Jordan Love. Allowing Watson to work on one side while Doubs continues to develop over the middle will free up Smith-Njigba (and hopefully a second-round tight end selection) to work against plenty of single coverage.”"

If selecting Smith-Njiba is why Brian Gutekunst moved up to No. 13, it’s a masterclass by the Green Bay GM, and perhaps a nightmare for Rodgers and the Jets.
