Cam Newton was voted No.1 on the NFL’s top 100 players list, but was that too high? Newton seems to think so, and shared his thoughts about who should have been ahead of him on the list.

Carolina Panthers’ quarterback and reigning NFL MVP Cam Newton was voted No.1 in the NFL Network’s top 100 players list for 2015. According to CBS Sports, Newton thought that was too high.

“[Tom] Brady or J.J. [Watt],” Newton said when asked who he thought should have been number one. He was not shy praising other players, and even included names like Antonio Brown, Luke Kuechly and Julio Jones.

Tom Brady finished No.2 on the list, while J.J. Watt rounded out the top three.

Newton earned the No.1 ranking for his 2015 season, when he threw for 3,837 yards, 35 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions — not to mention his 636 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns.

Despite winning the MVP award and leading the Panthers to a 15-1 record in the regular season, Newton is right: he is not the best quarterback in the league.

Newton is a difference maker without a doubt and the leader of that Carolina offense, but let’s not forget how good the defense was last season. The play of Luke Kuechly and now Redskin Josh Norman should not be forgotten. Would the Panthers have won 15 games and made it to the Super Bowl without Newton? Of course not, but it is hard to put Newton above players like Brady and Rodgers when he has played on a mediocre team for most of his career.

Brady has won four Super Bowls and von MVP in three of them, while Rodgers has a Super Bowl MVP under his belt for his performance in the 2010 game after entering the playoffs as the sixth seed. Newton, on the other hand, has only been above .500 twice in five seasons and lost this year’s Super Bowl to the Denver Broncos. Newton went 18-41 for 265 yards, no touchdowns, 1 interceptions and 2 fumbles lost in the game.

Now, Newton is one of the best talents in the game today, but as for crowning him the best quarterback, well, that won’t happen until Brady and Rodgers are ready to pass the torch down.

Newton showed his humble side during his interview, praising the other great talents in the league. His play in 2016 will determine if he is a guy who can overcome adversity and win or just another talent who can’t finish.
