It’s been said that making a great first impression is a key to success.

Hopefully new Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden was given a mulligan.

Gruden, who has experienced a whirlwind twenty-four hours after being named the Redskins head coach on Thursday was doing the prototypical interviews after the introductory press conference and had quite the slip up, suggesting he was ready to be part of the Raider Nation.

Wait. What?!?!

Yep – the brain lapse created quite the awkward moment in an interview with D.C. CBS-affiliate WUSA:

"“The only thing I can do is be Jay Gruden, coach these guys up, and hopefully make the Raider nation — Redskin nation — very proud.”"

Oh bother.

Thankfully Gruden quickly caught himself, but the flub was already complete.

Now, in fairness, Jay may have been channeling his inner-brother, who was the longtime Oakland Raiders head coach but that’s a pretty bad mix-up regardless.

Hopefully this doesn’t lead to owner Dan Snyder giving him a bag of apples….
