Samsung is always at the forefront of innovation, and now, they seem to be the next competitor to challenge Oculus Rift. While virtual reality is still a ways off, multiple companies want to make sure they are a part of it. While Facebook recently got on board with Oculus Rift, Samsung now wants to bring its own product to the market.
The company is set to unveil their competing virtual reality product this year. While Samsung has gotten in on the wearables, as well as a multitude of other technology categories over the past few years, it only makes sense for them to be on board here too. According to Engadget Samsung has already shipped prototypes of its device to select developers.

While the Oculus Rift is designed to pair with video games and software, Samsung is reportedly taking a different approach with their virtual reality peripheral. Samsung’s device will pair with their Galaxy devices and work in tandem to create a virtual reality through that connection.
Samsung has stated their goal is to beat both the Oculus Rift and Sony’s Morpheus device to the market. While they employed that same strategy with the Samsung Gear wearable smartwatch, Samsung saw poor reviews and feedback on the initial launch of the product. The hope would be, that they can debut their virtual reality device both first, and as the best product on the market.
Although no images have yet been released of the Samsung prototype, the device had some details unveiled. It will supposedly be cheaper than the competition and use a OLED screen for the display. The thought is that the device will also be wired, rather than wireless, to reduce lag issues that could plague similar offerings.
While the possibilities for VR headsets are endless, and the category is currently scorching hot, there has yet to be a true test to see how the technology will catch on. By the sounds of it, we won’t have to wait too much longer to find out.
