Griff Whalen is battling to make the Colts’ roster as a #6 receiver/backup punt returner. The effort he gave on this punt return Thursday night against the Jets should at least convince Indy’s coaching staff that he has plenty of toughness.

More from Indianapolis Colts

Whalen fields this punt on a hop and then gets absolutely blasted by Ellis Lankster and a couple of other Jets coverage guys. Whalen pops right up because, like I said, he’s tough.

An effort like that should factor in when the Colts make their final decision on cuts. Whalen took the shot, held onto the ball, popped right back up. I would give the guy a job just on the basis of willingness to sacrifice himself. You gotta know you’re going to get lit up when you field a punt on a bounce like that.

Some might suggest you should let that one go but Whalen was willing to give up his body to save his team a few yards. That’s the kind of can-do spirit that impresses coaches. I like the kid, I think they should keep him around.
