U2 Songs of Innocence album free for iTunes users

To cap off the fun at Apple’s special live event today, Tim Cook decided to talk about the backbone of Apple, music.  In talking about the sounds that drive people’s lives, he mentioned a band that Apple has long integrated themselves with, U2.  While performing live on stage, Apple decided to make another ground breaking announcement.

On iTunes, Apple would be gifting a new U2 album, “Songs of Innocence” to 500 million people, making it the largest album release in history.

Apple has a longstanding relationship with U2, one that goes back to a very warmly received iPod video back in the early days of the device.

As U2 has continued to travel, grow, and expand throughout the world, Apple has been there right next to them the entire way. With the release of U2’s Songs of Innocence on iTunes, Apple will have the largest captive audience in history to download the new record.

The album will be available to every iTunes customer, making it available in 119 countries across the globe.  It will be exclusively available through October 13. This is an incredibly impressive gesture by both Apple and U2.

Considering the amount of money to be made on 500 million albums, both parties are putting some significant stock in the backing that Apple and its consumers have provided.

Make sure to get onto iTunes and download your new U2 album today.  With the album being exclusive for the next month, make sure you get plenty of listening in before your Android based U2 friends have time to check it out.
