It’s unclear whether Detroit Lions’ superstar wide receiver Calvin Johnson will play against the New York Jets this Sunday.

More from Detroit Lions

ESPN has reported that Johnson missed practice for the second consecutive day on Thursday, and his absence from the field has raised serious doubts regarding his availability for this weekends’ game. Lions’ head coach Jim Caldwell shared his concerns on the matter:

"“Anytime that someone doesn’t practice, in particular when it’s not just a day of rest, which we would indicate on the medical report, there’s always some concern.”"

Through three games this season Johnson has racked up 329 yards and 2 touchdowns on 19 receptions. His continued production is critical if the Lions hope to remain atop the NFC North Division against the likes of the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers.

If Calvin Johnson cannot play on Sunday, then expect Matthew Stafford to seek out Golden Tate, the Lions’ second leading receiver, early and often. On the season Tate has 16 grabs for 201 yards, but he’s yet to reach the end zone. Running backs Joique Bell and Reggie Bush also figure to have increased roles if Johnson is unable to go on Sunday.

The Lions are 2-1 heading into Sunday, while the Jets are 1-2.
