Since the start of the season all the San Francisco 49ers have done is wait for the return of Pro Bowl defensive talent in Aldon Smith and NaVarrao Bowman.

Smith was of course suspended to start the season and will debut this Sunday while Bowman suffered a devastating injury in the 2014 NFC Championship game against the Seattle Seahawks. But just as both players are nearing returns (Bowman is still a few weeks away), the San Francisco 49ers are likely to be without their best defensive player as linebacker Patrick Willis is expected to miss the remainder of the season with a toe injury.

Willis, who has missed the past few weeks was hoping to get back on the field though the injury isn’t healing quick enough and it appears as if the defensive star will need to go under the knife.

While the San Francisco 49ers have played well on the defensive side of the ball without three of their best players for the past few weeks, you have to wonder how much longer the team can sustain their high level of play, especially if Willis does miss the rest of the year as expected.

A seven-time Pro Bowler and five-time All-Pro, Willis isn’t just the San Francisco 49ers best player on defense, he’s one of the best defensive players in the NFL. There’s no way to slice this as a positive for San Francisco despite backup Chris Borland playing very well.

Hopefully Willis has a speedy recovery and is back to terroizing quarterbacks once fully healed.
