Montreal Impact star Didier Drogba will retire as an active player, and join Guus Hiddink’s coacing staff at Chelsea.

Few players have been able to come in and make an immediate impact in Major League Soccer like Didier Drogba did last season. Drogba arrived in the middle of the campaign, and took the league by storm scoring 12 goals and providing one assist in a total of 14 matches.

Drogba not only helped the Impact qualify for the postseason, he also led them past their biggest rivals, Toronto FC, in the first round.

However, on Wednesday a report out of France emerged suggesting the striker is set to retire as an active player and join Chelsea’s coaching staff. L’Euipe is claiming that the 37-year-old is going to join Guus Hiddink’s coaching staff and should be on the bench in time for the club’s FA Cup match against Scunthorpe United on Sunday at Stamford Bridge.

It has been a season of turmoil for the Blues, currently sitting in 14th spot with just 23 points from 20 matches. The club decided to sack Jose Mourinho in December, and named Hiddink as their caretaker manager. The Dutch tactician had made it clear from the start that he wanted to utilize the Ivorian on his staff.

"“I worked with him five or six years ago and I was delighted to have such a professional in the squad,” Hiddink said at the time. “He is a legend already in this club, but also outside this club in the world. So it’s nice for guys with these big hearts to connect them somehow with the club.”"

Along with featuring for the likes of Chelsea and the Montreal Impact, Drogba also played with Le Mans, Guingamp, Marseille, Shanghai, and Galatasaray.
