The G League keeps growing. It started as a simple D, but over the years it evolved straight past E and F and went straight to G. And it’s coming to Mexico.

I love the G League. I truly do. It’s high level, somewhat experimental basketball done by people who are playing their hearts out to never have to play for that team again. If you’re looking for small victories day by day, it’s beautiful. Every call up, every time an NBA player gets sent down for assignment and crossed up by a 28-year-old journeyman, every time you see Jerry Stackhouse’s face it’s a joy. Everyone should feel that.

Some people put perimeters around the concept of everybody. The NBA are not that kind of league. They are looking to bring the delight of “I really don’t want to be here” basketball to Mexico. Marc Stein, basketball-word-person, had this to say on Twitter:

That’s pretty straightforward, really. Mexico is going to get a G League team before Denver. I would not have guessed that. In fact, I would have guessed many other things before that. At least eight off the top of my head.

“Isn’t Canada enough?” one might ask. “No, you idiot. No,” another should respond. “You’re terrible, and this is a really cool thing to happen,” they should continue.

This is a fascinating direction for the NBA go. Mexico City is the fifth-largest city in the world. It’s about six Seattles in population, and they’ve never even had a team. That makes them more important.

I don’t know what the basketball fan quotient is in Mexico, but that’s okay. The G League is all about experimentation. If it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out. They will move on, try something else, and continue showing Jerry Stackhouse’s wonderful face as much as possible.
