In a rematch of their game from exactly one week ago, two surging Western Conference teams will meet again Wednesday night. Since the Denver Nuggets’ 112-104 home loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver has dispatched Portland, Golden State, and Utah, winning each by at least 15 points. Its opponent, Minnesota, comes into the match having won seven of its last nine, including most recently a Dec. 25 national TV victory over the Lakers. Although that game was tight throughout, the Timberwolves pulled away with a 38-24 final period and finished with 121 points.
In the Timberwolves’ eight-point victory over the Nuggets last Wednesday, Minnesota similarly utilized a 32-20 fourth quarter to secure the win. Karl-Anthony Towns, Jimmy Butler, and Jamal Crawford combined for 70 points, while Jamal Murray dropped 30 points to go with Nikola Jokic’s 22. Unfortunately for the Nuggets, the Serbian center also committed a game-high 10 turnovers, more than the total of the entire Timberwolves squad. Jokic was playing his third game back from injury. Since, he’s been able to get three additional games under his belt, all the while taking much better care of the basketball (committing just seven total turnovers in those three games).
Murray will look to replicate his success from last Wednesday. In the 20-year-old Canadian guard’s favor, he’s averaging 18.0 points per game this month on 52.2 percent shooting from deep. In December alone, he has racked up four games of at least 28 points. Teammate Trey Lyles, who also went to Kentucky and is just 22, is playing at a high level as well. December has been a breakout month for the third-year pro, with game averages of 27.0 minutes and 14.0 points, and a 49.0 3-point percentage on 3.9 attempts per contest. For Minnesota, head coach Tom Thibodeau is entrusting Towns and Butler with heavy December minutes of approximately 39 minutes per game apiece. Presently, the duo is making the most of it, averaging a combined 46.8 points per game this month.

The Timberwolves have performed only marginally better at Target Center (compared to away) at 11-6, but their West-leading 18-6 in-conference record should be noted. Away from altitude, Denver has been much worse. On the road this season, the Nuggets have won just seven of 19 games. Following this second of four head-to-head meetings, these teams will face off twice in the regular season’s final week.
