The Cincinnati Bearcats and the Virginia Tech Hokies will meet up in the 2018 Military Bowl. Here’s what you need to know.

A season ago, Luke Fickell and the Cincinnati Bearcats were wrapping up a 4-8 season that was disappointing and didn’t directly seem to show much potential. The Bearcats were the very definition of bad and needed to find new ways to improve and build. This was their second consecutive four-win season and things hardly seemed to be improved over what was Tommy Tuberville’s final year of coaching.

Fortunately for the Bearcat faithful, Fickell didn’t take all that long to get Cincinnati right back on track. In 2018, Cincinnati came out and won 10 games. The Bearcats scored 34.9 points per game while holding opponents to 16.1 points per game. The rebuild was an unexpectedly fun and quick process that resulted in the program’s future appearing bright and promising.

Virginia Tech hasn’t experienced quite as good of a season in 2018. Things have been difficult at times for the Hokies this season. During the first two years of Justin Fuente’s tenure at Virginia Tech, the Hokies went 19-8.

This third season under Fuente the team stumbled to a 6-6 record. The sky isn’t falling and Virginia Tech fans should rally to fire the young coach, but this season didn’t end up being what it could have been.

After opening the year up with back-to-back wins, Virginia Tech went on the road and lost to C-USA’s Old Dominion. A win at then-22nd ranked Duke the next week was followed by being crushed by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The Hokies eked out a win over North Carolina and then lost four straight. It took back-to-back wins at the end of the season to even become bowl eligible.

Now, the struggling Virginia Tech team must find a way to compete with a successful Cincinnati Bearcats team.
