Relative to how they’ve done so far, Auburn and Tennessee could each be having a better season. Will this game contribute to one of the head coaches involved getting fired?

If you’re looking for a matchup between two teams who are both underachieving, you’ve come to the right place. The Auburn Tigers and the Tennessee Volunteers entered into the season with different expectation levels, but somehow both of these teams have fallen short of what they could be achieving this year.

Up in Knoxville, Tennessee, the Vols are having a very rough season. At just 2-4 so far this year, there’s a very real chance that this year is unsalvageable. That’s largely due to the fact that those four losses have come in back-to-back-to-back-to-back games.

Over in Auburn, Alabama, the Tigers are having a fairly good season so far, but their fans want more than just that. And more than just fairly good is hard to come by when your offense is inconsistent. At times, Auburn’s offense has been dilapidated, such as the time it managed score just 22 points against the South Carolina Gamecocks. For reference, South Carolina just canned Will Muschamp and paid him an absurd amount of money to leave.

Gus Malzahn and company have turned things around in recent weeks with a big win over LSU and a fairly respectable victory over Ole Miss. If Malzahn keeps winning, pressure from fans will gradually go away. If he loses this game, things get really messy really quickly. As for Jeremy Pruitt, it’s hard to see a path for him to save his job. If one did exist, it would start with the Vols winning this game, but good luck with that.

Those aforementioned offensive inconsistencies Auburn has been having shouldn’t be much of a problem in this game. The Tigers are averaging 28.3 points per game and 405.8 total yards of offense per game. Tennessee gives up 31.5 points per game and 408 yards per game. The Tigers should be able to take advantage of a relatively weak defense. Expect Auburn to win and cover the spread. Prediction: Auburn 34 – Tennessee 14.
