Matt Campbell seems to have some interest in leaving Iowa State for the Notre Dame job.

It would take something like Notre Dame opening up for Matt Campbell to leave Iowa State.

Well, that is exactly what happened on Monday night. With Brian Kelly shocking the sports world in leaving South Bend for LSU, the Fighting Irish have to find a suitable long-term replacement for the school’s best head coach since Lou Holtz. Campbell would, in theory, be a finalist for the Notre Dame job, but there is some speculation as to if the university is all that interested in hiring him.

Other candidates for the Notre Dame job are Cincinnati head coach Luke Fickell and current Fighting Irish defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman.

Notre Dame football rumors: Will Matt Campbell become next Irish HC?

While things can change very quickly, Campbell feels like the Irish’s third choice for head coach after Fickell or Freeman. Promoting Freeman from within makes sense. He has made a huge impact in his first year in South Bend. Though Kelly wants to bring him to Baton Rouge, Freeman would be a candidate to replace Fickell at Cincinnati if their head coach goes to … Notre Dame.

As with Campbell, Notre Dame is one of those jobs Fickell would actually leave for. Both have good things going at their respective schools. However, getting a blue-blood job in the midwestern footprint like Notre Dame is too good to turn down. Therefore, the Irish will have their choice of candidates between Campbell, Fickell, Freeman or someone else completely out of left field.

While Campbell will probably flourish at Notre Dame, it feels like someone else is getting the job.
