The Baylor Bears are Big 12 champions. Could they also find a way to sneak into the College Football Playoff? If things play out right, yes.

Baylor looked like they would roll to the Big 12 title early against Oklahoma State. Instead, it came down to the wire as the Bears held on for dear life and the conference championship.

The Cowboys were inches short of a touchdown with less than 30 seconds left in the game. The Baylor defense held with the game-saving tackle coming from Jairon McVea.

Now that they’ve won the ultimate prize in the Big 12, is it possible Dave Aranda’s team can get a shot at the College Football Playoff?

How Baylor can make the College Football Playoff

The Bears are part of a pack of two-loss teams with hopes of making it into a semifinal game. It’ll take a nearly-perfect scenario for them to make it.

First, Georgia needs to blow out Alabama and eliminate them completely from contention, even with a two-loss comparison.

Second, No. 2 Michigan needs to lose to Iowa in the Big Ten title game. The Hawkeyes would enter the fray of two-loss teams and would have a conference title on their resume as well. However, the Bears sit ahead of Iowa already and should have the advantage over them.

The best thing for all the two-loss hopefuls would be for Cincinnati to lose to Houston as well. The Bearcats would be knocked out of contention entirely with a loss and that would open up another slot for multiple two-loss teams to make it.

Then comes the debate. Georgia would be in and Notre Dame would also slide up despite their head coaching change.

The committee would then have to decide if Baylor’s Big 12 title outweighs Ohio State and Ole Miss, who ranked ahead of them to start the weekend. Those teams were inactive while the Bears picked up a Top 5 win, so there could be room to leap one of them.

Baylor avenged their one loss to the Cowboys and their second loss was by two points on the road at TCU. Both were better than Iowa’s losses to Purdue and Wisconsin.
