This season’s Liberty Bowl might as well be known as the Mike Leach bowl as the Mississippi State Bulldogs and Texas Tech Red Raiders meet up in Memphis.

Mike Leach is getting set to face off against the team he elevated to relevance at the beginning of the century. He’s also getting ready to face the program that very controversially fired him. Leach and the Mississippi State Bulldogs are getting prepared to play the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Mississippi State has been an odd team to keep up with throughout the season. The Bulldogs’ Air Raid is explosive and thrilling to watch, but the Bulldogs themselves are young and haven’t always executed well. When this team is firing on all cylinders, it’s nearly impossible to stop. Texas Tech has a tough task ahead of it.

The Red Raiders, meanwhile, are in the midst of a transition. While it seems like the Bulldogs are on the rise, Texas Tech is trying to get through the bowl season so that it can start fresh with a new coaching staff.

Interim head coach (and former Texas Tech quarterback under Leach) Sonny Cumbie has taken on that daunting job of keeping the Red Raiders moving forward after Matt Wells was fired. While Tech only has one win under him, Cumbie’s brand of the Air Raid is dynamic and fun to watch and he has nothing to lose with this bowl game.
