J.T. Daniels, a former 5-star quarterback in his own right, has opted to enter the transfer portal rather than stay at Georgia.

With the Bulldogs winning the National Championship just a week ago, the fallout from a roster standpoint has only just begun.

Georgia seems to have an answer at quarterback, or so it would appear. Smart has done nothing but praise J.T. Daniels on his way out the door, but the former USC quarterback and five-star transfer cannot be happy with his lack of playing time.

“Well Stetson’s a good football player,” Smart said after the Michigan game. “JT is, too. We’ve got two really good quarterbacks and I think the country should know that. Stetson’s made some really good plays with his feet. He’s kept things alive. He’s a good quarterback, but so is JT. We’re very fortunate to have both of them.”

That embarrassment of riches is now gone.

Georgia football: Will Stetson Bennett IV stay?

Bennett doesn’t have too many pro prospects, so it would benefit him greatly to stay at Georgia and perhaps develop as a quarterback. However, Bennett did not commit to returning next season after the Bulldogs defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Perhaps both Smart and Daniels got an answer here, though. It seems unlikely Daniels would leave a National Championship-winning team were he in line to be the starting quarterback in Smart’s quest for a repeat. That’s just not wise, especially since Daniels’ ultimate goal is to reach the professional level.

Bennett now has plenty of experience and will be in line as the unquestioned starter for a Georgia team with championship aspirations yet again. The monkey is off Smart’s back, and perhaps this could be the start of a new era in the SEC, where Georgia reigns supreme instead of Alabama.

Daniels won’t play a part in that narrative.
