Former North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Roy Williams spoke about Huber Davis making it to the Final Four in his first season.

Last season, Roy Williams retired after a 33-year coaching career in which 18 seasons were spent as the sideline boss for the North Carolina Tar Heels. Hubert Davis, an assistant coach under Williams, was hired as his successor. Now, Davis, and the Tar Heels are headed to the Final Four.

Following the Tar Heels’ 69-49 victory over the Saint Peter’s Peacocks, Williams spoke with Luke DeCock of the Raleigh News and Observer and was overcome with emotion and joy that Davis led the team to the Final Four in his first season.

Following the win, Davis was overcome with emotion during his postgame interview.

Davis, a former guard for the Tar Heels from 1988-92, had been one of William’s assistant coaches since 2012 up until he announced his retirement at the conclusion of the 2020-21 season. Shortly thereafter, Davis was officially named the program’s 19th head coach.

The Tar Heels went 24-9 in Davis’ first regular season as head coach, earning them the eight-seed in the East Region of the NCAA Tournament. They got past the No. 9 Marquette Golden Eagles in the opening round, had a thrilling overtime victory to eliminate the defending champion and top-seeded Baylor Bears in the Round of 32 and beat the No. 4 UCLA Bruins in the Sweet 16. Now, they are heading to the Final Four after their win over No. 15 Saint Peter’s.

Davis and North Carolina are heading to New Orleans, where they will take on the rival Duke Blue Devils for the first time ever in the NCAA Tournament. With a win, the Tar Heels can reach the National Final for the first time since 2017 and officially end Mike Krzyzewski’s coaching career, as he is set to retire once Duke’s campaign ends.

Williams has been seen cheering on the Tar Heels throughout the tournament, and he wanted to say how proud he was of Davis for what he has accomplished in his very first year as head coach.
