ESPN college football insider Pete Thamel named the top candidates to replace Scott Frost as Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach.

For Nebraska Cornhuskers fans wondering what would be the final straw for head coach, the answer was losing to the Georgia Southern Eagles and their head coach, Clay Helton. On Saturday, Sept. 10, Nebraska lost 45-42 to fall to 1-2 on the season. Less than a day later, the program announced that they have fired Frost as their head coach.

Nebraska fans are now wondering who the program is looking for to be their next sideline boss to hopefully turn things around. ESPN’s Pete Thamel tweeted out a list of names for Nebraska, and they included some intriguing candidates, including Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell, Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops, Alabama offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien, and more.

That is certainly a lot of names that will intrigue Cornhuskers fans.

Campbell has been a head coaching candidate for quite some time, thanks in part to how he has led the Cyclones football program. He holds a 44-34 record as of this writing (post-Week 2 of the 2022 season), and led the team to a bowl game in each of the past five season. Campbell’s work has gotten the attention of the NFL, where he reportedly turned down an offer from the Detroit Lions.

Stoops has done wonders with Kentucky. Most notably, they picked up a huge win over the Florida Gators this past Saturday. That in turn helped him become the winningest coach in program history with 61 victories.

O’Brien may be known for how his tenure as Houston Texans head coach/de facto general manager ended, but he does have experience leading a college football team, as he spent two years leading Penn State after replacing Joe Paterno.

As for who will serve as the head coach for the remainder of the season, that will be none other than passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach Mickey Joseph.

The coaching search for Nebraska will be one that will be followed intently throughout the remainder of 2022. Cornhuskers fans will be keeping their eyes peeled to see who the university will interview to replace Frost.
