Never back: Best memes and tweets trolling Texas for upset loss to Texas Tech

Twitter users declared that the Texas Longhorns were not back after they suffered an upset loss to the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

The one question that has surrounded the Texas Longhorns football program is “are they back?” Four weeks into the 2022 season, we can confidently say — not quite yet.

The Longhorns looked to maintain their Top 25 ranking with a win over the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Instead, after forcing overtime on a Bert Auburn 48-yard field goal at the buzzer, the Longhorns lost 37-34 after Trey Wolf hit a 20-yard field goal for the Red Raiders.

Texas only had one play in overtime, and it was a run by star Bijan Robinson. The problem is, Robinson fumbled the ball and Texas Tech recovered it. Five plays later, the short yardage field goal was made to give the Red Raiders their first win over the Longhorns since 2017.

As is the case whenever the Longhorns lose, Twitter users sent out their best tweets and memes at their expense. Not only that, but the Red Raiders received some love from former quarterback and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and former second baseman and 12th-overall pick by the Detroit Tigers Jace Jung.

The Longhorns were seemingly in good shape after Robinson ran for a 40-yard touchdown to give them a 31-17 lead. Instead, they watched the Red Raiders take a 34-31 lead with 21 seconds left in the game behind a touchdown run by SaRodorick Thompson, a touchdown pass from Donovan Smith to Baylor Cupp, and a 45-yard field goal from Wolff.

Yet, the Longhorns were able to reach the Red Raiders’ own 29-yard line to set up Auburn’s game-tying field goal at the buzzer. From there, we know how things ended in overtime.

Longhorns quarterback Hudson Card threw for 277 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception while completing 66.7-percent of his passes (20-of-30). Robinson ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries.

For the Red Raiders, Smith completed 38 passes for 331 yards and two touchdowns on 56 attempts.

After this loss, Longhorns fans will hear that “Texas is not back”for the next week.
