The Michigan Wolverines are looking to win the national championship by getting through the 2022 College Football Playoff.

The Michigan Wolverines were one of the lone undefeated teams remaining in college football in 2022. They capped off their campaign by handily defeating the rival Ohio State Buckeyes, and then defeating Purdue to win the Big Ten Championship. Now, they’re in the College Football Playoff as the No. 2 seed. But first, they have to beat the TCU Horned Frogs in the Fiesta Bowl.

Michigan fans have been craving for the football program to bring in another national championship. For those who don’t follow the Wolverines, and are curious when was the last time the team won the big one, we have the answer for you.

When was the last time Michigan won a national championship?

The last time Michigan won a national championship was back in 1997.

Michigan went undefeated in the regular season, beating several ranked teams like Colorado, Wisconsin, Penn State, Iowa, Michigan State, and Ohio State. The Wolverines completed their undefeated regular-season by defeating the Buckeyes 20-14.

As the No. 1 ranked team in the nation in their final two games of the regular-season, the Wolverines were selected to the Rose Bowl, where they faced the No. 8 Washington State Cougars.Trailing 13-7 in the third quarter, the Wolverines responded with 14 unanswered points, arriving on two touchdown passes from quarterback Brian Griese. The first was a 58-yard pass to Tai Streets, with the second being a 23-yarder to Jerame Turman. Michigan won 21-16.

After winning the Rose Bowl, the end of year polls were revealed, and the Wolverines were named the national champions of college football. It was their 11th claimed national championship.

To take home their 12th national title, the Wolverines will have to beat TCU in the Fiesta Bowl and the winner of the Peach Bowl between Georgia and Ohio State.
