Chaim Bloom’s time with the Boston Red Sox hasn’t gone so well. That’s putting it lightly. He joined the organization before the 2019 World Series was even completed. Three seasons deep, the Red Sox seem to be stagnant.
Bloom came from the Tampa Bay Rays where he managed to build a contender on an incredibly low payroll. He became one of the league’s most well-known and highly-regarded executives. Much of the responsibility for how poorly the team has played falls on him.
The Red Sox aren’t completely wrecked. Some moves have worked out well. These three, however, stand out as possibly the worst ones he has made since joining Boston.
3. Worst Red Sox moves Chaim Bloom has made: Signing Trevor Story
The Trevor Story free-agent signing is ongoing. That’s not even the worst part of this move. The six-year deal worth $140 million will extend through at least the 2027 campaign. If he’s anything like he was in 2022, it’s going to be a long couple of seasons.
Story battled injuries in his first year in Boston. He’ll be on the IL to start the 2023 campaign due to elbow surgery in January. Not only have the Red Sox lost Xander Bogaerts in free agency, but a possible replacement may also need to spend most of the year rehabbing.
Signs of a decline from Story were noticeable during his last season with the Colorado Rockies. He posted a .251/.329/.471 slash line, belting 24 home runs and driving in 75. The Red Sox signed him to a lucrative deal anyway. He became the starting second baseman and things got much worse.
Bloom saw his big free agent signing hit .238/.303/.434 with 16 home runs and 66 RBI for Boston in 396 trips to the plate. Appearing in just 94 games for the Red Sox, it was a mostly lost season.
There is a chance this signing does turn around. Those who doubted Story could be a star away from Coors Field have a reason to gloat at the moment. They’re looking very right with their assessment.
