Prospect pitcher Grayson Rodriguez made his MLB debut with the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday, and his father was in attendance, and nervous.

The Baltimore Orioles have called up a lot of their top prospects, such as catcher Adley Rutschman and third baseman Gunnar Henderson. On Tuesday, news broke that the team was calling up top pitching prospect Grayson Rodriguez to the major leagues, and that he would be making his start on Wednesday against the Texas Rangers. It was quite the setting for Rodriguez’s first MLB start, as he is pitching in Texas, where he grew up. He went to high school in Nacogdoches, Texas.

During the game, MASN cameras cut over to Rodriguez’s father, Gilbert, who was a nervous wreck watching his son. Here is one moment from the bottom of the third inning, where Rodriguez struck out Corey Seager.

Rodriguez had a solid first start, pitching five full innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits and recording five strikeouts in Baltimore’s 5-2 loss on Wednesday.

After the game, MASN showed video of Grayson and Gilbert embracing in an very emotional moment. As the video broadcast mentions, Gilbert built the baseball field in their backyard when Grayson was younger to allow him to practice.

While Rodriguez had a solid showing, Baltimore’s batting order couldn’t do much against Texas. Rangers ace Jacob deGrom allowed just one earned run on two hits, while striking out 11 Orioles batters in 6.0 innings.

Baltimore’s two runs arrived after Austin Hays reached on a fielder’s choice and an RBI single by Adam Frazier.

Rodriguez finally made his MLB debut, and he got to share the moment alongside his father and his family in his home state of Texas.
