The Kansas City Chiefs requested a private workout with Patrick Mahomes and Boston College wide receiver Zay Flowers, who could be a first-round pick.

The Chiefs, like most NFL teams just a week out from the draft, are incredibly active in tying up any loose ends. Brett Veach and Co. landed their backup quarterback in Blaine Gabbert on Tuesday, so that’s one less issue they have to worry about.

Wide receiver, however, remains a concern after the team lost both Mecole Hardman and JuJu Smith-Schuster in free agency. The Chiefs still have a decent stable of weapons, but if there’s anything we’ve learned about KC’s offense over the years, it’s that decent isn’t acceptable.

Look for Kansas City to select a wide receiver at some point early in the NFL Draft. Boston College’s Zay Flower appears to be a target, given they called him up last minute for a private workout with Patrick Mahomes.

Chiefs rumors: Will Kansas City select Zay Flowers?

As Matt Conner of Arrowhead Addict points out, it makes sense for Veach to ask Flowers to work out directly with Mahomes. If the two get along well, then perhaps Flowers is worth his first-round grade.

"“With Mahomes and other pass catchers building chemistry near his home, it makes sense that Brett Veach, the team’s general manager, might want to hear some direct reports from the franchise quarterback about his potential new weapon. A first-round pick on a wide receiver is something the Chiefs haven’t done in quite some time, so any investment made at that position should be signed off on by Mahomes.”"

Kansas City selects 31st in the first round. It’s unclear how many wide receivers are expected to go in the first round altogether, as this is considered a fairly weak class. If KC falls in love with Flowers, however, they must be willing to trade up if the situation calls for it.
