The 2022 college football season ended in January, but the upcoming campaign is drawing nearer. Here is the official start date for the 2023 season.

The 2022 college football season saw the Georgia Bulldogs win the national championship for the second year in a row, becoming the first team to do so in the College Football Playoff era.

With that, fans watched as some of the top players in college get drafted into the NFL, and tuned into their favorite teams’ spring games to get an idea of who should be starting next season. From there, it’s a wait until the start of the season. That is when football fans are guaranteed to have games to watch for a full weekend.

Considering it’s May and the college football campaign normally starts in the fall, we’ll fill you in on when you can expect meaningful football to be on your television, phone, or tablet screens.

When does college football start?

The opening weekend of the 2023 college football season is known as Week 0, and it will take place on Saturday, Aug. 26.

For Week 0, there will only be a select number of teams playing. Teams can receive a certain exemption to play in Week 0, such as those who are scheduled to play on the road against Hawaii this season. This rule allows them to start the season one week earlier.

Here are the games scheduled for Week 0:

  • FIU at Louisiana Tech
  • Hawaii at Vanderbilt
  • Navy at Notre Dame (live from Dublin, Ireland)
  • San Jose State at USC
  • UMass at New Mexico State
  • UTEP at Jacksonville State
  • Ohio at San Diego State

The remaining college teams that did not play in Week 0 will begin their respective seasons in Week 1, which runs from Thursday, Aug. 31 until Monday, Sept. 4. While the majority of games will be played on Saturday, Sept. 2, some games will be played that Sunday and Monday.

On Sunday, Sept. 3, the LSU Tigers take on the Florida State Seminoles and the Oregon State Beavers face the San Jose State Spartans. On Monday, Sept. 4, the Clemson Tigers face the Duke Blue Devils.
