Losing Maurkice Pouncey was a devastating blow for the Pittsburgh Steelers, though, it could have been far worse.

Thankfully sitting on the open market was former Tennessee Titans center Fernando Velasco, who the Steelers signed to a one year deal this afternoon, lessening the blow from the Pouncey loss.

Per Adam Caplan:

"Former Titans C/G Fernando Velasco agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Steelers, source said."

More often than not, the free agent market for offensive lineman once the season begins is extremely limited. You’re often found plucking through a career backup at best, but Velasco ranked in the top half of NFL centers last season and should fit well into the Steelers line.

While he’s no Pouncey, he’s far better than what could have filled the spot in most situations.

Kelvin Beachum should continue to see time, though, as bad as he struggled against the Titans this past weekend, if he continues to do so his role may be reduced – quickly.
