The Houston Texans need a starting quarterback, so how about finding one out of two former new England Patriots backups?

Brian Hoyer might be the most slighted quarterback in recent NFL history. The man almost made the Cleveland Browns a playoff team for the first time since something called Kelly Holcomb did it in 2002, but it just wasn’t meant to be.

Now that the Browns are content with mind f-cking their fan base by getting rid of Hoyer, the Houston Texans are plotting something even crazier — pairing two former New England Patriots backup quarterbacks with a former Patriots coordinator who now happens to be a head coach.

According to Houston Chronicle reporter John McClain, the Houston Texans are not only interested in Brian Hoyer this offseason, but they’re also interested in bringing back Ryan Mallett as well.

Basically, Bill O’Brien wants to recreate the 2011 New England Patriots backup roster — which consisted of both Hoyer and Mallett backing up Tom Brady.

A lot has happened since then though, as Mallett was a rookie in 2011 who still hasn’t had that much experience starting. Hoyer, on the other hand, nearly fixed the Cleveland Browns last season and might have ha it not been for what appears to be some internal sabotage.

That’s the total gain of the Houston Texans though, as pairing Mallet and Hoyer on the roster could bring about something special. If doing so produces a winner in Houston, then that will be proof that the Patriots backup quarterbacks truly are better than mostly any other quarterback in the NFL.

Then again, just ask the Chiefs how well things worked out with Matt Cassel, Romeo Crenel and Charlie Wiess — proving that there’s significant downfall potential with this idea as well.
