Steph Curry tops 2016 Millennials’ Athlete Index
To little surprise, Stephen Curry tops the list of Millennials’ favorite athletes.
For the second year in a row, 120 Sports has revealed its Millennials’ Athlete Index. The Index is a list consisting of the top athletes Millennials (the coveted demographic of individuals between the ages of 18 and 34) care most about. According to a press release from 120 Sports, the list was compiled after monitoring several metrics, such as consumer trends and online analytics.
"120 Sports uses up-to-the-moment insight from consumer trends to shape the way it produces its daily live and on-demand programming, providing real-time data on what is resonating most with the Millennial audience on a daily basis. Leveraging this information along with social analytics, 120 Sports and Ranker surveyed over 1,400 Millennials (defined as 18 to 34-year-olds) to determine the list of athletes most relevant to them."
The least surprising name on the list is that of Stephen Curry. The NBA’s incumbent MVP is, arguably, the most likable player in all of sports, what between his electric, aesthetically pleasing play, homey family life and team’s success. Second to Curry is J.J. Watt who, again, is little surprise, given his social media acumen and standing as the NFL’s resident warrior on the field/saint away from the gridiron.
After Curry and Watt, things get interesting. There are four baseball players in the top 10 – Mike Trout, Andrew McCutchen, Kris Bryant and Clayton Kershaw. For a plodding sport that often gets brought up in the same breath as American buffalo and the dodo, there certainly appears to be a crop of young stars ready to grab hold of a newer generation’s attention.
