Offensive tackle Jake Long is finally healthy and ready to resume his NFL career with a new team.

Eight years can seem like a lifetime. In fact, it’s double the average NFL career. And a lifetime ago, Jake Long had as bright a future ahead of him as anyone in the league.

At first, he didn’t disappoint. The offensive tackle taken first overall in 2008 was a franchise centerpiece with the Miami Dolphins, garnering four Pro Bowl appearances in five seasons, and an All Pro selection in 2010, to boot.

But, just as suddenly, Long was cut short.

After signing a mega deal with the St. Louis Rams in 2013, his brief stint there was highlighted by two torn ACLs to the same knee. His time with the Atlanta Falcons in 2015 was even less memorable, lasting just four games on the field—all as a reserve—leading to his impending unemployment.

For most, that’s where the story ends. However, the 31 year-old lineman —slimmed down and finally pain-free— is ready to start another chapter.

“I’m finally healthy,” Long told ESPN on Saturday. “This is the healthiest and best I’ve felt in probably about five, six years. My knee’s back. I’ve just been working out, feeling good and ready for the opportunity when it comes along.”

Although a workout last month with the Chicago Bears did not lead to a training camp invite, Long, now weighing in at a svelte 308 pounds, remains optimistic. “I feel the strength back,” he said.  “You can see it. You can feel it. My body feels good the way I’m moving, working out and how good I feel moving on it.”

Considering the premium for pass protectors with his type of pedigree, if he truly is healthy, don’t expect this free agent to remain unsigned for long.
