The Washington Nationals turned the first 3-5 triple play in MLB history against the San Francisco Giants.

The Washington Nationals have done a lot of things since relocating to the nation’s capital. One of the few things that they hadn’t done before Friday night is turn a triple play.

On Friday against the San Francisco Giants, the Nats turned an extremely unique triple play after first baseman Ryan Zimmerman caught a line drive, stepped on first, and threw it to third baseman Anthony Rendon to complete the first 3-5 triple play in MLB history.

That triple play helped Washington beat the Giants 4-1 and helped them escape a dangerous bases loaded situation in the eighth inning. Thanks to some terrible baserunning by the Giants, the Nats now have a six-game lead in the National League East over the Miami Marlins and a 7.5 game lead over the New York Mets.

Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford got a bit unlucky on that triple play. He hit the ball extremely well. It just happened to straight to Zimmerman. With that loss, the Giants have lost three straight games and have seen their National League West lead shrink to just one game over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
